qualifications of the candidate and reflect the corporate chemistry, neither of which can easily be put to paper. The emotional qualifications will be directly related to how well the job is structured, the amount of risk involved, and into whose hands the candidate will be asked to commend his spirit. The answers may also reduce the number of likely candidates and determine the remuneration package, for, regardless of what the client says he can ajford to pay, an executive commands his salary by the judicious ability to share risks, and the shrewd ones to not take such responsibilities lightly.

At the very outset—at the time of drawing the specifications—I always emphasize six points for my clients:

• Is this search necessary? Or, do you already have someone who could, if the functions of several people were to be rearranged, effectively handle the task?

• Even where a star performer is required, and a search therefore necessary, the fact of recruitment, in itself, provides both an opportunity and an ideal excuse to restructure and streamhne several other functions.

• Don't seek more skills than you really need. If the fellow can spin a double somersault, it shouldn't matter if he cannot also juggle.

• The laborer is worthy of his hire. And the higher you want him to fly, the greater must be his rewards. Recruit a second-rater, and the whole act will come tumbling down.

• The higher, the fewer. Or, the greater the risks, the tougher it is to fill the job.

• A candidate whose only experience has been at ground level may be unable to perform on the high trapeze. Or, it may be difficult—sometimes impossible—to recruit someone from a highly structured organization who is capable of performing what may appear to be exactly the same role in an unstructured environment.

I make these very basic points because it is all too easy to be diverted from the fact that, while certain skills are absolutely
